Oh my goodness gracious, did I love Jackson and Leila. Their story line isn't necessarily an original one -- it's a tried and true one, to be honest -- but Ms. Duke wrote it to work, and work it certainly did.
Leila is a huge tomboy. With the initial's of L.J., she's been able to fool men for years in fantasy football -- there's something about a woman playing and beating hundreds of men that just doesn't seem to work. But with her initials and the keeping of her gender to herself, she's made a name for herself. Now, she's getting an opportunity to work as a sideline reporter -- but with a little bit of inside knowledge from someone, she knows to play it dumb a little bit.
The funny part about that was Jackson caught on right away. I loved as he goaded her in their initial meeting, and how when she realized it, it was as if a friendship was formed right then and there. From the beginning, Leila and Jackson simply worked well together.
Jackson has stayed single for years because of something deep and dark in his mind. The real kicker is this is a man who wants the white picket fence and the rambunctious toddlers -- it's more than evident in his thoughts and the few conversations he has. But because of this deep, dark secret, he knows that's not in his cards, so he plays the playboy card instead.
I very much enjoyed as these two went from fast friends to lovers, to a true, solid relationship. Jackson has trust issues (go figure, with the title and all), and of course, per romance novel writing class 101, that is where the fall out will lie, but beyond trust, these two have such a deep, deep chemistry and love for one another, so watching as this story unfolds felt real and certainly likely. The big "black moment" of the story was a bit of a two-fold, but with it we certainly see the full depth of emotion these two have for one another.
The other aspect I absolutely adored about this book was the best friends -- and I am so freaking excited to see that Bennett is next to fall. I'm sure his leading lady has nothing to do with a plan Leila and Jackson think up...
The only cons, which I didn't factor into rating this book, was I found the epilogue to be a little lackluster for my tastes. Don't get me wrong, it was sweet and very Jackson and Leila, but I wanted just a little bit more. But beyond that, I found the story to be greatly written and the characters to be well developed and certainly well loved.
