Stone (gah, I just love all the names of the males in this series…) Petty is a police officer who has just pummeled a man for his last time. If there’s one thing Stone can’t put up with, it’s domestic abuse. After answering a call (on probably the worst day in a long time… wake up late [always a problem], flat tire, hole in pants…), Stone ends up at a house of an alleged domestic abuse. He’s supposed to wait for his partner, but hears screaming before his partner arrives. When he busts into the house, he sees the husband beating on a cowering, crying wife, and when the child makes a noise, the husband picks her up and tosses her – and that, my friends, was where Stone’s control snaps.
Now, I can’t say I blame the man, but as is painfully evident, Stone has some anger issues. After not handling the situation the way a man in his position should have, he’s sent to anger management –
…which Stone figures he can handle – hell, he’d do anything to keep his badge, agree to anything – until he flips through the brochures and recognizes the teacher.
The hippie he had the displeasure of running into not once, but twice, before (in SEARCHING FOR BEAUTIFUL).
Stone and Arilyn…
My goodness, do these two butt heads.
Stone purposely antagonizes her. Arilyn just responds in her kind, houtey-toutey way. She talks to him like she’s above him. I could just picture her – she was like the image of cool, calm, and collected, where nothing could ruffle her feathers…
…but when Stone sees that, he goes out of his way to do just that – and he ruffles her feathers good.
I actually enjoyed watching these two. I wasn’t so sure I would by the filet of fish incident happened. I didn’t think there was any way these two would see eye to eye. Stone and Arilyn were very much opposites, but Arilyn brought such light into his life.
Like Stone points out, these two were always going to have their bickering moments. They would fight and disagree, but that was just the little parts. When they were together, they were damn good together. Arilyn needed Stone in her life to take her down a few notches, but equally, Stone needed Arilyn in his life to show him there was good in the world.
…and to teach him to just breath.
