Watching sex tapes at the office is just part of PR professional Vivian Blake's job, especially when she has to clean up a celebrity's image. Except that her newest client isn't quite that easy. Racecar driver Jarod Cage is beyond hot, and his onscreen “performance” is already compromising Viv's cool professionalism.

While Jarod hasn’t exactly been discreet about his personal life, he never thought his reputation could cost him both his sponsor and his racing career. Now he has to put his future in the hands of a tiny, pixie-like publicist. Which is becoming a problem, because the heat between them is about to redline. But when you go this hard and fast, putting on the brakes is the most dangerous thing you can do...

How Clare James Gets Down and Dirty… with her books!

Thanks for having me, Mignon! I’m so excited to be out talking about my new book Caught, and all-around writerly good stuff. Especially with people who love romance as much as I do.

Writing romance novels is about the best job a person could have, and I pinch myself on a daily basis because I can’t believe I’m so lucky. But…it’s not easy. Especially writing all those steamy scenes.

So here’s how I keep things fresh and interesting:

#1 Set the mood.
When writing sexy scenes, it’s so important to use all of your senses, so I like to do that when I’m writing as well. I like a dim room with a yummy smelling candle lit—I have an orchid fragranced candle that is perfect.

With sound, I can’t always listen to music when I’m writing because I get distracted, but I like to play something inspirational before I start writing to get me in the mood.

Picture boards can be excellent for visual stimuli. Oh, and then there’s taste, I’ve made a terrible habit of having a huge bowl of candy next to me as I’m writing. I now feel lost without it.

#2 Get lost in the moment.
My best writing comes about when I’m a little out of it—either right away in the morning when I’m still a little dreamy, or late at night when I’m exhausted, works best. My favorite thing is when I’m so tired writing that I don’t remember what I wrote. It feels completely new to me when I read it the next day, and that is so awesome. I also write my sexiest scenes all at once with my eyes closed. No stopping! Continuity in these scenes are key, so you don’t want to stop in the middle of one!

#3 Check the fear at the door, or grab a glass of liquid courage.
I remember the first time I wrote about a dirty-talking hero. It took me forever to get through the scene, blushing and wiggling around in my seat. And then I thought, what the hell, I’ll just write the scene for me. Nobody else has to see it. I let myself go there…and it was so dang fun! Now that’s how I approach those tough scenes. I write them for me first, knowing I can delete them if I want. But I never do.

Also, don’t underestimate the power of a glass (or three) of wine to help you along the way.

#4 Heat is always best with heart.
Sure, sex scenes are fantastic, but they don’t mean a helluva lot without feeling. These scenes can show incredible growth in characters, so I like to use them to their fullest. Hot and emotional scenes that can gut you—those are the best!

#5 There’s so much more to life than missionary…
I’m always on the lookout for a new place my hero and heroine can get down. Caught is chock-full of sex scenes outside the bedroom, which is one of the reasons why I think it’s so fun.

So there you have it, fun ways to keep it fresh in the bedroom… when writing!

It's been a minute since I've found a NASCAR romance that I could enjoy -- Pamela Britton was the queen of them, if you ask me.

That said -- the Pamela Britton thing -- Clare did a really good job. Not quite PB status in my book, but with Pamela missing in my world, Clare fills that void for me.

In CAUGHT, you are immediately drawn into Vivian's world of PR -- the public relations aspect of keeping clients out of trouble, and watching sexy NASCAR driver Jarod's sex tape? Well... not exactly a hardship in Vivian's book, but still. While she can't help but wish she's the blonde in the video (and obviously the mastermind, as Jarod didn't know this was happening), it's Vivian's job to make sure this all just rolls over.

Vivian is very much a northern Yank, with her speech and manners, and Jarod is very much the southern boy -- and that's only the beginning of their opposites. Even though this book is in the romance category and the outcome is obvious, one could only assume that when paired up with a sexy playboy -- that you're attracted to, and you're a relatively attractive person in your own right -- that ya'll will hook up. And they do. And it's steaming.

Gotta love a little steam.

This is your opposites-attract, bad boy meets good girl, type of story -- definitely one to revisit!
